Qvarta is an industrial design studio in Ukraine - product design, prototyping and engineering for manufacturers. Studios like this rarely think about search, yet the buyers do search: 'industrial design studio', 'product design services', specific capabilities such as prototyping or design for manufacturing, and portfolio queries. Qvarta's site presented beautiful work with almost no text, duplicate pages cluttering the index, thin metadata and no alt text on a portfolio made entirely of images. The goal was a meaningful, measurable traffic increase.
An SEO audit set the baseline and surfaced the index problems. Duplicate pages were eliminated and the index cleaned of junk - tag archives, pagination duplicates, media attachment pages - so Google's attention concentrated on the pages that mattered. Content was created for the service pages: what each capability involves, what a client receives, how a project runs, which industries the studio serves - the text a buyer needs and the studio had never written. New meta tags were written and implemented across the site.
Technical specifications for the programmers covered the audit fixes and the structural changes. Because the portfolio was the studio's strongest asset and was invisible to search, alternative text was written for the images across the site - descriptive, specific alt text naming the product, the industry and the design work - so the portfolio could be found through image search and could support the service pages. Service pages were optimized around the capability queries and linked to the relevant portfolio pieces.
For a visual studio, the work was largely about giving search engines words for what visitors could already see.
Traffic grew to around 3,000 unique visitors per month, from a site that had previously been found mainly by name. The cleaned index, the new service content and the searchable portfolio turned the studio's work into a source of enquiries.
Alt text on a portfolio is more than an accessibility box to tick. Each image was described the way a buyer might search - 'industrial design of a medical device housing', 'prototype of a consumer electronics enclosure' - which gave the studio hundreds of long-tail entry points through image search and let the portfolio pages support the service pages they linked to. The index clean-up mattered for the same reason: with attachment and tag pages gone, the portfolio pieces themselves were what Google indexed and ranked.
Design studios, architects and creative agencies in Vancouver share this profile: a strong visual portfolio and no words for search. North SEO's on-page and content work does what this project did - service pages that explain, alt text that makes the portfolio findable, an index cleaned of clutter.
