Steam on Wheels is a mobile car detailing service in the United States - the detailer comes to the customer's home or workplace. Mobile services have a Google Business Profile problem built in: there is no storefront, so the profile has to be set up as a service-area business, and Google's rules for hidden addresses and service areas trip up most owners who try it themselves. Steam on Wheels had a website and customers but no working profile, so searches like 'mobile car detailing near me' went to competitors with a physical shop.
We created the profile as a service-area business, with the address hidden and the service area defined by the cities and zip codes the company actually covers - the configuration Google requires for mobile services and the one most often done wrong. Keyword research for the profile focused on the detailing terms customers use: mobile detailing, interior detailing, ceramic coating, paint correction, steam cleaning, plus the locations served. Competitor analysis reviewed the detailers ranking in those areas - shop-based and mobile - to see how they were categorized and described and where the gaps were.
Categories were set with a primary category for car detailing and secondaries for the specific services; services and products were created individually with keyword-rich descriptions and price ranges where the company publishes them. The business description was written around the search terms and around the mobile proposition - we come to you - with the service area and booking method made clear.
Reviews were checked, responded to and, where necessary, reported, and four keyword-based posts were published to show activity and highlight specific services. Because a mobile business has no storefront photos, the visual side was handled in a later phase; the initial build concentrated on getting the service-area configuration, categories and services right, since those determine whether the profile ranks at all.
Steam on Wheels gained a correctly configured service-area profile competing for mobile detailing searches across its coverage area. A second profile for another location was built subsequently, and the full local SEO campaign - which took the business to top local rankings in three months - is documented in a separate case study.
Service-area configuration deserves explanation because it is where mobile businesses go wrong. Google requires a mobile service to hide its address and declare the areas it serves; declaring too wide an area, listing a home address as a storefront, or reusing a phone number from another listing leads to suspension - and a suspended profile can take months to recover. We set the coverage to the areas the company genuinely serves, verified the profile through the method Google offered, and documented the configuration so the client would not accidentally undo it. That groundwork is why the later campaign could build on a stable listing.
Mobile and service-area businesses in Vancouver - detailers, cleaners, mobile mechanics, dog groomers - face exactly this configuration problem. North SEO sets up service-area profiles correctly the first time, which is usually the difference between ranking and being suspended.
