An affiliate e-commerce site - a review and comparison site that earns commission on purchases - reached out in mid-2022 with a familiar problem. The site had plenty of content and had invested in it, but could not rank for its target keywords on google.com in the United States. Competitors with similar products were sitting on page one; this site was stuck on pages three and four where traffic is close to zero.
Affiliate SEO is unforgiving because the competition is entirely about content quality and authority. There is no local advantage, no brand pull; the page that answers the query best and is backed by the stronger domain wins.
We started with the pages themselves. For each target keyword we analysed the articles that actually ranked in the top positions: how long they were, which subtopics they covered, how they were structured, what questions they answered. Then we rebuilt the client's pages against that benchmark - relevant to the query from the first paragraph, an appropriate word count, full coverage of the subtopics buyers care about, and a structure that makes comparison easy.
Only after the on-page work was complete did we move to off-page. We evaluated the link profiles of the competing pages to estimate what it would take to compete for the top positions, and built an outreach plan to close the gap with genuinely relevant, high-quality links rather than volume.
Outreach was manual and specific. We identified publishers in the product category, pitched content that gave them a reason to link, and secured placements one at a time. Each link was checked for relevance and authority before it was accepted; nothing was bought from networks. The rebuilt pages were monitored weekly so we could see which ones responded to the link work and adjust the plan.
The results showed within months of the on-page rebuild and picked up further as the links landed. Traffic climbed steadily and peaked at 75,000 visits in a single month in February - from a site that had been effectively invisible for its money keywords.
It is worth being precise about what 'rebuilding a page against the benchmark' meant, because it is not keyword stuffing. For each query we listed the subtopics the top-ranking pages covered, the comparison criteria they used, the questions they answered in headings, and the depth they went to - then wrote a page that covered the same ground more clearly and added something the others lacked. The word count landed where it needed to be as a consequence of coverage, not as a target in itself. The link profile analysis worked the same way: we looked at the referring domains behind each competing page, estimated how many links of comparable quality the client's page would need, and built to that number.
The method is the same one North SEO uses for content-driven sites in any market: model the pages that win, rebuild yours to beat them, then earn the links that let them rank. If your content is good but stuck on page three, this is usually why.
